With Tokyo Olympics 2021, Wiki Loves Sport begins

The 2020 Summer Olympics which was postponed; kickstarted with an opening ceremony in Tokyo on Friday, 23 July 2021. With this, the third edition of Wiki Loves Sport has started till 5th of September 2021 to improve and extend the content related to sport in general (Olympic & Paralympic Games in particular). Wikipedians from any language of Wikipedia are invited to participate.

Wiki Loves Sport is the first multi-language and cross-wiki campaign that encourage the participation and promotes creation of contents about (not exclusively) women, non-binary and para-athletes in Wikimedia projects.

This contest is organized to fill Wikipedia content gaps based on gender, linguistic and ethnic minorities, etc. The contest is organized by WikiDonne User Group. The main motive is to improve the free knowledge about sport (with a special focus on women, LGBT+ communities, minorities and underrepresented groups), the Olympic & Paralympic games in all languages.

On it’s first edition, 117 new articles were created, 153 articles were edited with overall 1.01K total edits coming from 19 editors across Wikimedia movement.

Camelia Boban, AffCom member and Co-founder of WikiDonne User Group has brought this Wikipedia online writing contest in June 2019.

Wiki For COVID-19: 2020, the year of Information

2020 was a year that gave anxiety, suffering, despair and many such negative emotions. It was the year COVID-19 affected many lives throughout the world. It changed the way people live, work, think, learn and socialize. The pandemic forced entire events, celebrations, offline projects, gathering to be limited to screens.

When the director-general of the World Health Organisation proclaimed that the world was fighting not just a pandemic but also an “infodemic”, it was not immediately clear just how prophetic that statement would prove to be.

Wiki for COVID-19 was an online initiative for increasing awareness of the ongoing pandemic (COVID-19) and tackling misinformation spreading at an alarming rate meanwhile promoting Wikimedia projects. Basically, the idea behind this was to make people aware through promotional videos so that they can gather reliable information on Wikipedia.

We produced content in video format to help community members, people around the world learn how to increase their awareness and modify their online behavior so they don’t unwittingly spread misinformation and create anxiety among people. Check out the videos below.

1. What happens with Alan?

We illustrated how COVID-19 is impacting people’s lives and emotions. Misinformation was at peak in the beginning phase of pandemic which made consumers anxious. Thus, we portrayed how a young boy fights with misinformation spreading around through the use of Wikipedia and later how his fear subsides.

2. Tips on COVID-19

We presented some tips on how to keep oneself stress free by engaging in Wikipedia. We urged people to remain updated about what is happening in the world and be an informed reader.

3. Do you feel locked inside your home and want to travel?

In this time of pandemic, tourism has been restricted, people are told to come outside only if it’s extremely important. It’s not safe yet for tourism related things. So, we came up with this amazing concept of “Travel with Wikimedia Commons”. It drives people who want to travel to beautiful places, enjoy tourist destinations in this travel restricted time to Wikimedia Commons so that they can get free access to photos of breathtaking tourist destinations staying at their homes.

4. Experience Challenge

Today many people of different age groups are active on social media. There are different trends going on social media everyday. Thus, we tapped the ongoing trend of “#challenge” and came up with the concept of #experiencechallenge through which we gave the task of making experience video during COVID period and how our viewers dealt with the pandemic. It was amazing to see that viewers respond so enthusiastically.

Wiki Loves Folklore 2020 announces winners

In February, Wiki Loves Folklore 2020—an international photographic contest—with the unique theme and first event of its kind was held. It was organized by the Wikimedia community for the very first time to document folk cultures of different regions of the world at Wikimedia Commons. However, It is continuation of Wiki Loves Love 2019.

Over 118 countries across the globe has participated in the contest. During the folklore month, over 18,500 free-licensed media files uploaded on the Wikimedia Commons with folk cultures theme. This proved the great success of the contest worldwide.

The top three winning photographs of the contest are as follows:

Nepali Wikipedia updates as of today, May 29 2020

Nepali Wikipedia is the Nepali edition of Wikipedia, launched on 3rd of June 2002. As per Alexa, Wikipedia is one of the 11th most popular websites in Nepal, as of May 2020. Nepali Wikipedia is the largest online encyclopedia in Nepali language. Currently, it has 34,168 articles and a total 96,521 pages including redirect pages, talk pages, etc. As of today, it has 1,094 media files.

As you may know, it only features free content and all the text are available under creative commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0) license. It doesn’t feature any commercial ads and is owned and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation.

As of today, it has 48,280 registered users and 144 active users. Out of which, there are 8 administrators and 2 bureaucrats who are responsible for administrative actions. Moreover, there are 8 bots, 16 autopatrol users, 5 reviewers, 3 rollbackers and 5 template editors.

As of April 2020, Nepal and Provinces of Nepal is the most viewed page of this project. Nepali Wikipedia has 809,658 total edit counts by it’s volunteer, and the daily average views count is 23,288.

Apart from that, 175 articles are nominated for speedy deletion. Hurry up slowly and contest those speedy deletion nomination before it’s deleted.

Introducing Wiki Awareness Campaign in Nepal

A campaign to improve recognition of Wikipedia and understanding of its uses among the different communities of Nepal.

This campaign is initiated and coordinated by Tulsi Bhagat and his team. It aims to increase awareness of Wikipedia across the country, Nepal.

What are we trying to accomplish with this campaign

Improve recognition of Wikimedia projects in Nepal
Engage new readers
Promote Wikimedia projects in Nepal
Promote different language wiki-communities of Nepal
Encourage people of Nepal to freely share in the sum of all knowledge

Projects

The Billboards Initiative: In this project, we had focused on installation of static and digital billboards around two major cities of Nepal and shared the entire project data via social media sites.
The Calendar Initiative: In this project, we will be distributing Wiki-informative Calendars to the students of different universities, educational institution and professionals.

Maithili Wikipedia turns one year old

Maithili Wikipedia completed its first year on 6 November 2015. To celebrate, Wikimedians of Nepal and Rajbiraj Wikimedia Community team members have organized an event to facilitate the winners of first Maithili editathon and the anniversary celebration. Community members have organized a 45-day-long editathon to expand and create new articles on Maithili Wikipedia, which started on 1 October and lasted to 19 November. During the online edit-a-thon, 999 articles were created and modified—out of a total of 1,557 articles on the site.

Seven Maithili Wikipedians took part on the edit-a-thon competition, whose main purpose was to grow participation among Maithili speakers and editors. After the end of the competition Wikimedians of Nepal and Rajbiraj Wikimedia Community members organized an event to reward the winner of the competition and commemorate the anniversary.

The event and prize distribution was organized at Neta Chowk, Rajbiraj. In the programme, Maithili Wikimedians, Maithili linguists, and Maithili journalists spoke about the need for a Maithili Wikipedia and its importance. The winners of the edit-a-thon are Tulsi Bhagat (1st), Nilam Karn (2nd), and Bijay Chaurasia (3rd) and received awards from the Maithili Sahitya Parishad President Subha Chandra Jha. During the programme, the participants discussed:

To expand the articles base.
To improve the quality of the articles.
To upload images showcasing Maithili culture and heritage.
To Plan editathons and other outreach events.
To extend support to Maithili as well as Wikipedias in other languages of Nepal.

The event ended with an informal session in which each of the participants was part of a ceremonial cake party. The event was reported in the Rajbiraj Today, News Today and Aajko Waatawaran newspapers of Nepal as well as the online Saptari Jagaran.
